Sandvine to Reveal 2015 African Internet Trends at AfricaCom
WATERLOO, Ontario, November 16, 2015 /PRNewswire/ --
Sandvine (TSX: SVC), a leading provider of intelligent broadband and network solutions for fixed and mobile operators, today announced that they will reveal the latest African Internet usage trends at AfricaCom.
The data was collected as part of Sandvine's Global Internet Phenomena Program which, together with Sandvine's Internet Phenomena Blog, is industry-renowned for revealing the latest facts, fads, and future trends about consumer Internet usage from networks around the globe.
Sandvine's solutions are currently being used by more than 30 networks in approximately 20 African countries to provide actionable business intelligence and policy solutions in order to deploy new services and improve subscribers' Internet quality of experience.
Some of the unique trends found in Sandvine's latest examination of African networks include:
Mobile Networks
- WhatsApp, driven by the recent addition of voice calling, now accounts for more than 10% of downstream traffic (7% last year). This makes it the second largest source of traffic behind only HTTP Browsing
- Streaming video accounts for almost 9% of downstream traffic, a significant increase over the 6% observed last year. For comparison, in North America and Europe mobile video typically accounts for more than 35% of downstream traffic
- Communications applications now account for 30% of total traffic as more subscribers move away from using traditional voice calling and SMS messaging towards a mix of VoIP and over-the-top (OTT) messaging applications
Fixed Networks
- Streaming video is the leading source of downstream traffic (29%), but is still significantly lower than most other world markets where it is typically the majority of traffic
- YouTube is the top video streaming app, accounting for 16.3% of downstream traffic. For comparison, in North American it accounts for over 20%
The full African dataset will be released publicly as part of a Global Internet Phenomena Report to be issued in the coming week, which will also discuss traffic trends in North America and the Middle East.
