Sexual Dysfunction in Men Improved With Saw Palmetto
LONDON, June 11, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --
A natural treatment made from Saw Palmetto berries can have a significant effect in reducing sexual dysfunction in men with prostate problems, a new clinical trial has found.
A male libido study carried out by Swiss-based herbal specialists A. Vogel is the first using extracts from Saw Palmetto berries to show improvement not only on the symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) but also the erectile and ejaculatory problems it often causes.
The treatment, marketed in the UK by A. Vogel's Bioforce arm under the brand name Prostasan, was given to 82 patients, most of them aged between 50 and 70.
During the eight week-trial in Switzerland they took one 320mg capsule of Saw Palmetto extract daily.
At the end of the trial the 18.8 per cent suffering severe BPH symptoms had dropped to only 4.3 percent, while overall 66 percent reported enhanced erectile function and libido.
Practising urologist, Dr Eugen Riedi, who organised the trial, says results clearly showed Prostasan significantly improved not only BPH but also all areas of sexual dysfunction.
"That is a critical factor when it is considered one of the side-effects of frequently prescribed medication is that it may actually worsen sexual function with consequent loss of libido to a quite marked degree," he adds.
"Though Prostasan equals synthetics for efficacy it has none of their side-effects, and furthermore is readily available over the counter at UK pharmacies and health food stores without the need for a prescription."
