Skanska selects energy-efficient elevators from Otis for New Karolinska Solna University Hospital
- One of the world's most modern and energy-efficient research hospitals to feature 40 Otis Gen2® elevators
FARMINGTON, Connecticut, April 23, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Otis Elevator Company, a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX), today announced that its Sweden affiliate has been selected to provide 63 units, including 40 energy-efficient Gen2® elevators, 20 Bedlifts (freight elevators) and three handicap dumbwaiters, to Skanska Healthcare AB for New Karolinska Solna, Sweden. New Karolinska Solna University Hospital is pursuing Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) Gold certification and is designed to use half the energy of a traditional hospital its size.

The hospital's Gen2 elevators from Otis will:
- Reduce energy consumption — Energy-conserving ReGen™ drives make Gen2 systems up to 75 percent more energy efficient than conventional systems with non-regenerative drives.
- Conserve valuable building space — Otis' patented, polyurethane-coated steel belts make the Gen2 machine 70 percent smaller than comparable machines. A more compact, energy-efficient machine also frees up building space and reduces operating costs.
- Limit environmental impact — The Gen2 system's coated steel belts and machine require no additional lubrication, eliminating the need for storage, cleanup and disposal of potentially hazardous waste.
"Otis is honored to again be chosen by Skanska, the largest general contractor in Sweden, for our energy-saving technologies," said Pedro Baranda, president of Otis Elevator Company. "This win with one of the world's most energy-efficient research hospitals underscores the Otis commitment to products and services that reduce energy consumption and offer optimum performance, as well as energy-saving manufacturing processes that help reduce the company's environmental impact."
Installation of the elevators, and construction of NKS hospital, will be completed in late 2016.
Otis has also been selected for its energy-efficient products by hospitals around the world, including Kohinoor Hospital in India — the first hospital in Asia, and only the second hospital in the world, to be awarded LEED Platinum certification, and the Nye Ahus Hospital in Norway.
