LONDON, March 29, 2016 /PRNewswire/ --
Smarkets, one of the world's largest betting exchanges, has released statistics on the firm's performance over the Cheltenham Festival. The London headquartered company has stated that it has broken its own records for the second year in a row, cementing its position as the exchange leader for horse racing betting.
The company reported bets totalling £111m over the four-day omnibus event, shattering previous records by 550%. In addition to the record-breaking volume, Smarkets paid out traders £9.6m in winnings, and rewarded 240 traders with 0% commission. Some of the company's other highlights included:
- The Triumph Hurdle saw £7,070,945 traded on a single race
- Capacity peaked at 260 bets per second
- Smarkets had the best price 27 out of 28 races against bookmakers Ladbrokes, Paddy Power, Coral, Bet365 and William Hill
- The trading platform performed with 100% uptime through the duration of the event.
Cheltenham is a notoriously challenging event for bookmakers and exchanges. Online operators consistently have slowness due to demand for markets; and bookmakers, who take on betting risk, can see substantial losses.
Smarkets has swept into the market and established itself as a technology and customer experience innovator within the betting industry over the past few years, focusing exclusively on better prices and a professional experience for traders.
The company's efforts have taken hold: "We've seen unprecedented growth at Smarkets for the past two years," commented CEO Jason Trost. "Our team has worked exceptionally hard to challenge the industry status quo on price, product and experience. We're looking forward to offering the same level of service to our customers throughout 2016's busy calendar."
