Third Annual Concept-Based Curriculum Symposium to Address Challenges in Nursing Education, Provide Tools for Success
PHILADELPHIA, May 11, 2015 /PRNewswire/ --
Nurses to gain knowledge, skills to implement conceptual teaching-learning techniques into educational programs
Elsevier's Academic Consulting Group will host the third annual Concept-Based Curriculum Symposium from June 4-5, 2015, at Sheraton Kansas City Hotel at Crown Center in Kansas City, Mo. The event will offer a wealth of practical information for nursing educators and institutions that have already transitioned to a concept-based curriculum or are just beginning to explore their options.
"A conceptual approach helps nursing educators manage curriculum content through information management, engage students, develop the thinking skills of nursing students, and produce nursing graduates who are highly skilled in the management of patients in a health care system that is increasingly complex," according to Jean Foret Giddens, PhD, RN, FAAN, et al, in Mastering Concept-Based Teaching: A Guide for Nurse Educators (Elsevier, 2014). "A concept-based curriculum provides the infrastructure to help students see the connection between concepts through the use of exemplars."
For more information about the level of adoption of a concept-based curriculum in nursing schools across the country, access a nationwide study on concept-based curriculum in nursing.
The two-day conference will provide an in-depth look at how a concept-based curriculum addresses many of the challenges in nursing education today. It will also explore practical strategies to help attendees successfully implement conceptual teaching-learning techniques into nursing education programs. Attendees can choose from two tracks, one for faculty who are new to a concept-based curriculum and another for those who have experience with a concept-based curriculum.
"The symposium gives nurse educators an opportunity to hear and learn from the leading concept-based curriculum practitioners and engage in meaningful conversation with peers," said John Danaher, President, Elsevier Education. "We hope participants will return to their institutions armed with practical information to take their educational programs to the next level."
Featured speakers include Nelda Godfrey, PhD, RN, ACNS-BC, Associate Dean, Undergraduate Programs and Clinical Professor, The University of Kansas; Susan Sportsman, PhD, RN, ANEF, Director of Academic Consulting Group, a Service of Elsevier; and Tim Bristol, PhD, RN, CNE, ANEF, a faculty development, curriculum design specialist and owner of NurseTim, Inc.
