William Fry Solicitors traditionally provisioned its employees with BlackBerrys, however the demand to use other devices, particularly iPhones, grew significantly. The IT team sought a solution that would enable them to embrace iOS with appropriate security and control policies. Michael Devitt, IT Director at William Fry, explained:
"With rising demand from senior partners for the use of iPhones and other smart devices such as iPads, it became clear that a BlackBerry-only policy was no longer fulfilling the needs of our employees. We began a phased migration to Apple. In doing so, we needed to ensure that every member of the practice had the same, secure, and compliant access to corporate email and information on their device, and that we were confident that company data was safeguarded."
The firm originally considered a sandbox approach to MDM, however during trials, found that this did not protect the native user experience of the device. According to Devitt, feedback from employees on this approach quickly brought home how important it was to retain the native user experience, he said, "users want to experience the iPhone as an iPhone and iPad as iPad, this wasn't possible with the sandboxed approach."
"When CWSI recommended MobileIron, we saw it drilled right down into the operating system. The solution enabled us to centrally manage the new iOS devices in one management platform, while protecting the native user experience to support our employees' productivity. Its multi-OS approach also enables us flexibility in the future for any BYOD or other platform initiatives we consider."
William Fry joins a growing list of global legal firms that depend on MobileIron for managing and securing its smartphone and mobile apps estate, including Norton Rose, Allen & Overy, Watson Burton, and Maclay Murray & Spens. MobileIron has been successful in the legal sector because it is the only vendor that can deliver multi-OS security whilst preserving the native user experience.
Philip Harrison at CWSI has worked closely with William Fry and other legal clients on managing and securing smart devices. According to Harrison the legal environment requires some of the most demanding levels of mobility and security for data. MDM solutions must meet the highest security, compliance and control measures, without hampering productivity or usability for employees. He explains:
"The iPad is being used increasingly in legal environments, it is considered more convenient for lawyers who need data managed on the move; wherever, whenever. Balancing quick and simple access to vital corporate information for employees, with compliance needs for the sensitive nature of the data, is one of the biggest challenges firms face. In this environment, if a device is compromised, lost or stolen, the firm must be able to have visibility into this, and critically, enforce policies to ensure sensitive data doesn't become compromised.
"This is where MobileIron's control functions such as monitoring and selective wipe really come into their own. As smartphones and tablets become a common tool in the legal sector, we must ensure security and compliance are met to the highest, cost-effective standard in order to safeguard sensitive information and protect clients, staff, and company data."
