VanQuoteDirect Looks at Regular Van Maintenance
LONDON, February 28, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --
Vans or commercial vehicles should have a regular service and maintenance to help it keep running for longer. However, this can be pushed back over the colder months so as it gets brighter outside, van owners should look at giving their vehicles a once over. VanQuoteDirect, a commercial van insurance provider, looks at some top maintenance tips.
The first things to check are the tyres as they are the only link between the vehicle and the road, making them a key component for safety and comfort. Mark Hare, VanQuoteDirect's Managing Director, says "Owners can use a depth gauge to measure that the tyre tread is at the legal requirement of 1.6mm. Low tyre pressure uses more fuel and can wear out your tyres quicker, so make sure they are inflated to the correct pressure." He explains that basic steps can make all the difference.
Another basic step is to ensure that all the lights, including indicators and registration plate lights, operate correctly to avoid poor road visibility, accidents or unnecessary eye fatigue for the driver. Mark says, "Good vehicle lighting is essential for safety. Drivers, who spend most of their time on the roads, could keep spare bulbs and fuses in their vehicles, just in case."
The wiper blades on windscreen wipers can deteriorate even when it is not in use, because of its sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures. Mark says, "It's inevitable that wipers will naturally wear out and should be replaced when streaks appear, or any jumping or noise starts happening. Using worn wipers can reduce visibility and also cause scratches on the windscreen."
Mark also suggests checking that fluid levels are all topped up such as the brake fluid, oil and engine coolants. Drivers should also make sure that antifreeze fluids are checked after the winter, rainier season where this could have been used more, and double check that the washer jets spray properly for a clear windshield.
Making sure that the commercial vehicle or van is properly maintained in between services and MOTs will help prolong the life of the vehicle. It's also important to read the vehicle's manual to check if there is any extra maintenance activity that is recommended, as routine services vary for each vehicle.
