Offshore Azerbaijan, the operator was already behind on their schedule to restore production from a platform well when a setting tool and plug got stuck downhole. The plug had set only partially, not breaking the shear stud and thus trapping the tool. Things went from bad to worse when the slickline operation to fish the tool latched it but then also got stuck.
Welltec® has recently developed a new tool, the Well Stroker® XXS, which is an e-line deployed tool with the ability to pull or push up to 60,000 lbs on objects in a well. Because it is a small, e-line tool, it was quickly mobilized offshore, rigged up and run in the well to recover the stuck tool strings.
In the first run the Well Stroker® XXS latched the slickline tool, which was latched onto the setting tool, and began pulling. At 55,000 lbs force the shear ring parted freeing the plug and the tool strings. These were subsequently retrieved and another plug set finishing the operation.
Had this new technology not performed as expected the operator would have had to mobilize a heavy duty coiled tubing (CT) unit offshore to accomplish the job instead. In today's cost conscious environment the operator was very happy to establish production while avoiding the delay and costs associated the CT mobilization.
