Where was Great in 2012 - Winter Ski Season Review
LONDON, June 18, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --
After record snowfall across much of Europe, the 2011/12 ski season has finally come to an end. Ski break specialist Neilson takes a look back at this year's best ski destinations.
Tignes has to gain a mention as the year's most consistent resort. When the snow had all but melted away elsewhere, Tignes continued to provide plenty of snow sure skiing days. The heavy snowfall also meant that there was some fantastic off-piste action to be had over some of the most exciting, and challenging terrain, in the world.
Tignes's Grande Motte glacier also provided some of Europe's premier glacier skiing and quite possibly some of the most breathtaking views in the Alps. One of the prestigious Three-Valley resorts, Tignes offered a plethora of après-ski options that are above average for many other French ski resorts.
Those looking to catch some rays as they plunge the pistes were in luck in Pas de las Casa (Andorra) this year, with day after day of brilliant sunshine. Pas de la Casa was also a great choice for a value ski holiday, with comfortable ski chalets at very affordable prices. The resort's vibrant nightlife continues to entice people back year after year for a ski-hard and party-hard cheap ski deal.
It's also a great resort for mixed-ability groups. A variety of pistes, from gentle nursery slopes to more challenging freeride and intermediate runs, ensured that there was something for everyone.
In terms of pure levels of snow, those taking last minute ski deals in Zermatt and Klosters were pleasantly surprised this year, with 2012 providing record snowfall for both resorts, One of Europe's most chic and popular resorts, Zermatt saw 67 inches of powder this season, providing fantastic off-piste and helo-skiing opportunities across its huge 350km high-altitude ski areas, in addition to a wide array of bars and boutiques. A favourite with the Royals and famous for its world-class skiing in an unspoilt village atmosphere, Klosters enjoyed a high of 100 inches However, North America was hit hard this year, with resorts struggling due to lack of snow: Utah's Ulta ski area saw 92 inches - 70 inches fewer than the previous year.
Nevertheless, globally 2012 offered some of the best skiing seen in recent decades, leaving skiing enthusiasts of all levels looking eagerly ahead to the 2013 season. Why not book ahead now to get the best cheap ski holidays and deals in the world's best resorts?
