XCMG's Tunnel Boring Machines Used In Construction of Montenegro's First Highway

JABUKA, Montenegro, Sept. 18, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- The Jabuka tunnel project section of the Republic of Montenegro's first north-south highway was officially completed on August 26. During the two-year construction project, two XTR260 tunnel boring machines from XCMG, the world's leading manufacturing company, were used to finish the tunneling and withstood the strains placed on them by the varied terrain and environment.

In September 2015, XCMG deployed two XTR260 coal cutters from the Port of Shanghai to Montenegro. The Jabuka tunnel has complex soil conditions that requires the tunneling machines to perform flawlessly.

"This project by China Road and Bridge Corporation is the most advanced and most technically challenging road construction project in Montenegro," said Wang Min, chairman of XCMG.

"To speed up the construction schedule, XCMG's XTR260 coal cutters were chosen by CCCC Tunnel Engineering Company Limited to complete the tunneling tasks. Not only did these machines help to put the project back onto schedule, but they broke several construction records during the last two years."

The XTR260's travel mechanism with drive roller and guide roller uses wide crawler shoes, which reduces floor pressure and allows the machine to adapt to different foundations. Its large span cutting boom can reach a cutting height of 7.1 meters (23.29 feet) and it's optimized for railway and highway tunnels which have large cross sections.

The machine uses advanced technologies such as remote control, leakage detection, failure warning and security protection. It's equipped with top hydraulic and electrical components within a humanized design to make operations safe and reliable.

The project manager from CCCC Tunnel Engineering Company Limited noted the exceptional work of XCMG's engineers and service team who ensured the smooth completion of the tunneling tasks.
