Zipcar Completes Streetcar Integration, Giving UK Members Access to Global Network of More Than 9,000 Car Club Vehicles
LONDON, November 2, 2011 /PRNewswire/ --
- Members now have access to most advanced mobile and social media car club applications
Zipcar, Inc. (Nasdaq: ZIP), the world's leading car sharing network, today announced the completion of the integration of Streetcar vehicles and members into the Zipcar network. With more cars in more places throughout the UK, access to Zipcar's global network of over 9,000 vehicles, and Zipcar's industry-leading technology platform and suite of mobile and social apps for iPhone®, Android™ and Facebook, it is now easier and more fun for members in the UK to find, reserve and drive a Zipcar.
Beginning today, all members now have full access to over 1,700 vehicles across London, Cambridge, Oxford, Brighton, Bristol and Edinburgh, as well as access to Zipcar's worldwide fleet of 9,000 vehicles including those in the US and Canada. Vehicles are available by the hour or the day for a simple fee (as low as 5 pounds Sterling per hour and 49 pounds per day) that includes parking, insurance, petrol, 40 free miles, the Congestion Charge and 24/7 roadside assistance.
"With the integration complete and everyone operating on the same system, and with the new apps and more vehicles, we believe we have raised the bar for car clubs in the UK," said Mark Walker, General Manager, Zipcar UK. "We're looking to continue to make car clubs a convenient, mainstream transportation option for consumers and businesses across the UK, and the Zipcar platform allows us to do this."
Zipcar's technology platform improves the member experience with more reliable technology and fewer steps required to access a Zipcar vehicle. The technology platform is enhanced by Zipcar's suite of mobile and social applications that make finding, reserving and driving a Zipcar more convenient than ever. Zipcar's iPhone app, the industry's first, has won numerous awards, including being named a "Best Travel Gadget" by Time Magazine.
In addition to the iPhone app, Zipcar's recently-introduced Android application allows members to search for and reserve Zipcars by time, location and vehicle type. They can use the new application to view available Zipcars on a map, get directions to the vehicle location and make, extend or cancel a reservation. The application can also be used to honk the horn to locate a Zipcar, as well as lock and unlock the vehicle.
Last month, Zipcar launched the car sharing industry's first reservation application, the "Reserve a Zipcar" app, on Facebook, which allows members to view available Zipcars on a map or in a list-view, get directions to the vehicle location and make, extend or cancel a reservation. The application also allows members to share the details of their reservation with their Facebook friends as a status post on their wall. The "Reserve a Zipcar" app is available to anyone with a Facebook account.
During the course of the past month, Zipcar coordinated a complex and comprehensive migration of more than 1,000 vehicles and tens of thousands of members from the Streetcar network into the Zipcar network. The process went smoothly and as of today, every vehicle is now part of the Zipcar network and can be reserved via the Zipcar.co.uk website. Every member has been pre-converted to a Zipcar account, and all members need to do is register online at https://zipcar.co.uk/streetcar/account/login to finalise the conversion and activate their new Zipcard.
