The Norwegian Dr. Mads Fredrik Gilbert, a professor at the School of Medicine, University of Tromsø, will receive the Hamdan International Award for Humanitarian Medical Services on December 15 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Dr. Gilbert was chosen to receive this prestigious Award because of his significant social services in Gaza strip and his impressive voluntary work in the field of trauma and emergency medicine.

At a grand ceremony, H.H. Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, UAE Minister of Finance and the Patron of the Award will honor Dr. Gilbert alongside with 18 other winners of various categories of this Award at its 8th term (2013-2014).
Additionally, Dr. Gilbert will be a keynote speaker at the 8th Dubai International Conference for Medical Sciences that will be held in conjunction with the Award ceremony, from 15 till 17 December.
Dr. Gilbert is a multifaceted personality; he is a highly successful physician, academic, politician and a world renowned activist. His long and varied experience with field teaching and training missions is truly impressive. He made a significant impact in Palestine, Burma, Afghanistan, Lebanon, Algeria, Iran and Sri Lanka, and he was supported by the Trauma Care Foundation and Tromsø Mine Victim Resource Center.
He became actively involved with solidarity work concerning Palestinians since the 1970s, and he offered his medical services many times in the Palestinian territories and Lebanon.
Thanks to his efforts, Tromsø is a twin town of Gaza, since 2001. And Tromsø has sent more health workers to Palestine than any other in the world.
Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum Award for Medical Sciences is a non-government organization established in 1999, and its Award has become the most prominent in the region.
The Hamdan International Award for Humanitarian Medical Services is bestowed upon four winners biennially. The winners are selected prudently from a long list of personalities and organizations, who significantly contributed to alleviating the suffering of humans under exceptional circumstances such as epidemics, famine, wars and natural calamities.
Dr. Mads Fredrik Gilbert is among the four winners of the Hamdan International Award and for Humanitarian Medical Services. The other winners are the Carter Center from USA, Noor Dubai foundation from UAE and Dr. Melvin Korkor from Liberia.
