VehicleScan Could Stop Illegal Immigrants Risking their Lives
POOLE, England, March 26, 2014 /PRNewswire/ --
Chemring Technology Solutions' vehicle surveillance technology, VehicleScan, could help UK and French border agencies reduce the number of illegal immigrants risking their lives by hiding underneath vehicles.
This follows a report by the BBC that used cameras to capture men climbing beneath trucks in order to enter the UK from Calais secretly, with drivers oblivious to their actions. Recently two migrants were killed attempting to reach Dover undetected.
In February, the UK Home Office issued advice on how road transport companies and their drivers should secure their vehicles to stop people using them to enter the UK illegally, this includes a checklist issued by the UK Border Agency, covering below vehicle checks.
VehicleScan is the world's most advanced and highest resolution under vehicle surveillance system. Whereas the traditional 'mirror on a stick' approach does not allow the operator to get a clear view of a vehicle's centre section, VehicleScan gives a complete view of the underside. With a typical throughput speed of 18 mph (30 kph), vehicles at ports are not unduly delayed.
Tim Jones, Head of Sales at Chemring Technology Solutions, said: "The escalation of conflicts in the Middle East and Africa has seen a surge in the number of migrants at Calais, many of whom are desperate to find a better life in the UK and the rest of Europe. With estimates showing that only one out of 100 trucks are searched at Dover, VehicleScan would provide a safe and effective option for security professionals to identify any objects or people that are concealed under a vehicle."
VehicleScan is part of the wider Site Security Solutions available from Chemring Technology Solutions, which also includes CCTV, standalone ANPR, and site access control equipment.
